Barrier Ground
The universe is still expanding, but slowing down. My feet, planted firmly here on Earth, spread farther apart. I am growing too. We all are. Away from each other.
“Maybe,” she said, “before Aurel goes to bed, give him a little bit of milk. It will help to calm his nerves.” Her bags were packed. A cab waited patiently outside.
“Maybe so,” I replied, looking anywhere but where she stood. Outside I could see it would be another bright-hot day in Phoenix, that there was laundry to do, dishes to clean.
And then she was gone.
Aurel, our kitten, that she wanted, had sensed the tension in the air. Or so she said. When night came I gave him a little bit of milk, and some food to go along. He seemed rather calm.
For my part there was no hunger to lead me out to eat alone, just numbness, strangely satisfying. I washed the dishes and did the laundry, then lay awake in bed for the remainder of the night, thinking of only one thing.
