The Tunnel: Currency
After checking out from the motel they walked along Lark street and found themselves in Washington Park, where the Devil was delighted to discover a small pond. They made their way to an empty bench near its southernmost bank and sat down. The Devil stared into the water and momentarily lost himself there. Bart took stock of their remaining American currency: Twenty-one dollars and eight cents.
"Not much that this is gonna buy us," Bart said, plucking up a penny and flipping it high into the air.
"I always found it an odd thing, paper currency," said the Devil, "Especially today's version, since it's not backed by anything, yet people seem to prefer it."
"In God we trust, right?" Bart grinned. "People prefer a lot of things without question."
"Well, I suppose the living should be allowed at least that much."
"You're finding them interesting, aren't you, Devil." "Is a living person always interesting? That's a good question."
